ONE WORLD NETWORK NORTH EAST

About One World Network North East

Background
OWNNE was set up in February 2002, to support teachers in schools in the North East region of England to build a global dimension in their school curriculum.

Across the UK, in every English region and in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, there is a similar initiative, identified as ‘Enabling Effective Support’ (EES). You can find out more about EES from the DEA website (link opens in a new window).

Funding
The EES initiative is funded by the Department for International Development (DFID). OWNNE receives funding from DFID to increase both the quality and quantity of global education in North East Schools by:
  • Raising the profile of the global dimension with education policy makers.
  • Building partnerships with LAs and NGOs in North East England.
  • Enabling local access to high quality teaching and learning resources.
  • Providing global dimension expertise, training and teaching and learning materials for teachers and NGOs.

What support do we offer schools?
We are able to provide subsidised support to schools and offer schools an initial meeting with key staff and a staff meeting or half-day INSET without charge. We also offer schools a grant of £250 to develop the global dimension in their curriculum that can be used on resources or supply cover. Further support is charged at £200 per half-day.

Our Regional School Support Officers can run staff meetings and INSET around the global dimension and can offer support to individuals or groups of teachers with curriculum planning to develop the global dimension in schemes of work.

OWNNE also runs a range of professional development workshops and training sessions throughout the year; see our events page for details of upcoming events. Our projects page gives details of global dimension projects that schools can get involved with.

Staff
Averil Newsam is the Regional Coordinator and has been advising teachers on the global dimension in the National Curriculum since 1989.

OWNNE has three Regional School Support Officers, Pam Barmby, Paul Green and Penny Gulliver, who all work with schools, local authorities and educators across the region.

OWNNE works closely with the Tees Valley One World Centre, who support schools in the Tees Valley area.
